Increase In Compensation Claims By Prisoners

Recent figures have shown that there has been an increase in the number of personal injury accident claims made by prisoners across the UK over the past three years.

In Scotland alone from 2004-2009 prisoners have received over 4m in compensation for injuries they received whilst in prison. Many of the claims were made by inmates who were assaulted by fellow prisoners. They protest that their personal safety was not adequately protected by the authorities during their stay in prison.

Personal injury compensation paid to prisoners includes £1,000 to an inmate who injured his hand while working in a prison shed. Another convict received £1,000 after he injured his back lifting heavy slab and one prisoner was compensated £2,000 for the burns he suffered from boiling water.
