Around 4,000 victims of the UK's infected blood scandal will each receive an interim compensation payment of £100,000 after a 40-year battle.

On 17 August 2022, the Government announced interim payments of £100,000 for UK victims of the contaminated blood scandal which saw victims infected with HIV and hepatitis C through contaminated blood, or blood products in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, imported from America - it is thought around 2,400 people died as a result of this.

Payments will be made by the end of October by UK Government across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It has been described as the biggest treatment disaster in the history of the NHS.

Partners, children, siblings and parents of those who had been infected should be eligible for payments. If the inquiry and the government accept these proposals then it is possible that the final bill could be more than £1bn.
