Asbestos Debris Found in An Altrincham Garden
Global Asbestos Awareness Week 1 – 7 April
A roofing contractor has come under fire from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after asbestos debris was found in an Altrincham garden, just outside Manchester. The incident occurred during the removal of an old garage roof, exposing his own workers and local residents to dangerous asbestos fibres.
What Happened?
The contractor failed to follow proper asbestos disposal regulations, leading to contaminated debris falling into a resident’s garden. Following the resident raising concern, HSE conducted an investigation and confirmed the presence of chrysotile asbestos.
To make matters worse, asbestos waste was found spilling onto a publicly accessible area. Personal belongings stored in the affected garages were also contaminated. The site has since been professionally cleaned. However, the contractor faced legal consequences, receiving a 12-month community order and a fine exceeding £3,500.
The Dangers of Asbestos
This incident highlights the ongoing risks of asbestos exposure, particularly in older buildings. Asbestos is linked to severe respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. With Global Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1–7, 2025) underway, now is the perfect time to spread awareness. It is also vital to push for stricter safety measures in the workplace and at home.
Preventive measures include:
- Avoiding unnecessary disturbances of asbestos-containing materials.
- Using proper protective gear when working with asbestos.
- Hiring certified professionals for asbestos removal.
- Undergoing regular health screenings if exposed to asbestos.
Health Risks Due To Exposure
Exposure to asbestos can lead to severe health risks, primarily affecting the lungs. Here are the major health concerns associated with asbestos exposure:
Mesothelioma – A rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. It is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure.
Lung Cancer – Prolonged asbestos exposure significantly increases the risk of developing lung cancer.
Asbestosis – A chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibres. This may lead to lung scarring, breathing difficulties, and an increased risk of lung infections.
Pleural Thickening & Effusions – Asbestos exposure can cause the pleura (lining of the lungs) to thicken or accumulate fluid. This typically results in breathing issues and chest pain.
Other Cancers – Asbestos has been linked to cancers of the larynx, ovaries, and gastrointestinal tract.
