Making A Compensation Claim For Burns
Claiming Personal Injury Following Burns
If you have suffered burn injuries as a result of an accident that wasn’t your fault you may be able to make a claim for personal injury compensation.
Suffering burns can be an incredibly painful injury which can possibly lead to scarring and disfigurement as well as potentially affecting vital organs.
The physical effects can be severe, but there is also likely to be emotional and psychological distress related to the injury.
Causes of burns and scarring injuries
Most burns are caused by a heat injury to the skin from flames and hot liquids (scalds). Electrical burns are less common but often can be more serious. Burns can also be caused by corrosive chemicals coming into contact with the skin – again this can cause severe injury.
Burns or scald injuries can occur in many situations, examples include:
- Accidents at work
- Road traffic accidents
- Accidents in schools or nurseries
- Medical negligence
- Accidents in public places
Categories of burns
Burns are classified by one of the following three categories:
First-degree Burns
First-degree burns are minor burns which only affect the top layer of skin. There should be no blistering, but the skin will appear red. There will be some pain, but it shouldn’t last for too long depending on the area of the body affected.
Second-degree Burns
Second-degree burns are more serious and, in most instances, will be more painful. Deeper layers of skin are affected making the skin appear bright red, with a chance of blistering. The skin may also appear wet due to the fluids lost through the site of the burn.
Third-degree Burns
Third-degree burns are the most serious type of burn. The skin will be completely burned away with damage potentially caused to the muscles, ligaments and tendons beneath. The victim may feel no pain due to the nerves being destroyed. Third-degree burns take a long time to heal and will almost always leave permanent scarring. In many cases, skin grafts from unaffected areas may be required.
