Patients recalled over shoulder op concerns
26 Sep 2022
Patients who had shoulder surgery at Walsall Manor Hospital are being recalled after the surgeon Mian Munawar Shah was suspended.
Walsall Manor Hospital has set up an emergency helpline for people who had surgery by Mr Shah between 2010 and 2018. It has been reported that there were 18 complaints against Mr Shah. Some patients have lost the use of their arm after surgery.
Mr Shah carried out private work for Spire Healthcare and NHS operations at Walsall Manor Hospital and Spire Little Aston between 2010 and 2020. Spire Healthcare spokesperson said: "Mr Munawar Shah has not practised at Spire Little Aston since March 2020. "We have liaised closely with the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust throughout their review of his practice, and continue to do so. "We are reviewing whether we need to contact and offer support to patients who had particular treatments with Mr Shah at Spire." The spokesman added: "We understand the distress and uncertainty this may cause to patients. Patient safety and the quality of the care we provide to patients remains Spire Healthcare's highest priority."
Joanne Aldridge was privately operated on by Mr Shah in 2010 at a hospital run by Spire Healthcare. The trust admitted liability and she has since received compensation after he severed her radial nerve, which left her in terrible pain and unable to lift her arm. Ms Aldridge added: "I tried to stop him because I knew that I wasn't the first and I wouldn't be the last. I tried to get something done so others didn't have their lives ruined." Mr Shah has been suspended. The hospital trust has set up a helpline and will send hundreds of letters to patients who may have been affected.
CLAIMING FOR MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE
In order for all personal injury claims to be successful, it is necessary to prove there has been negligence from a third party. If you have suffered an injury while under the care of a medical professional you could be suffering from any number of different side effects. If your subsequent injuries have led to you being unable to work, or in a state of continued or intermittent pain and suffering, you are entitled to make a claim. If you or a member of your family has experienced any form of clinical or medical negligence, there could be an opportunity to make a claim. Sources used: BBC News
