With thousands of people travelling by plane each day, airports are very busy places. Unsurprisingly, there is the potential for accidents to take place, some of which result in injury. Airport Injury Claims
There are a number of airports across the UK, including:
- Manchester Airport
- Gatwick
- Heathrow
- East Midlands Airport
- Stansted
- Bristol
- Liverpool John Lennon
- Leeds Bradford
- Birmingham
- Newcastle
It doesn’t which airport you were injured at, if you have become hurt through no fault of your own, you may be eligible to make a compensation claim.
Injured in an airport accident at work?
While most people associate visiting an airport with going on holiday, for lots of people, an airport is their place of work. If you work at an airport, for an airline, in a shop, bar or restaurant or for the airport itself, if you have an accident through no fault or your own you are legally entitled to make a claim. Legally, all employers must provide their staff with a safe working environment. If your employer has failed to do so and consequently, you are involved in an accident at work, you may be able to hold them to account and to claim compensation for your injuries. Whether you work as a baggage handler, as cabin crew or in a shop or restaurant, we can help you.
BAGGAGE HANDLER ACCIDENT AT WORK
Many accidents that occur in airports involve manual handling or lifting of luggage. Unsurprisingly, it is baggage handling staff who are most at risk of sustaining injuries in accidents of this type. If you work as a baggage handler at an airport, your employer is legally obligated to protect you while you are at work. They must:
- Provide you with appropriate safety equipment e.g. boots with toe protection and suitable grip, hi-visibility clothing and ear protection.
- Make sure you have adequate rest periods
- Give you training on the use of lifting aids or machinery. They should also give you manual handling training so you know how to lift heavy luggage properly
If your employer has failed to do any of the above and you sustain an injury as a result, you may have a potential airport injury claim.
Other airport accidents and injuries
· INJURIES CAUSED BY LUGGAGE AND ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THE BAGGAGE CAROUSEL OR TROLLEYS
Travellers and members of staff can sometimes be injured in accidents involving a luggage trolley or carousel. For instance, you may be hurt by a collision with a trolley or luggage falling off the baggage carousel.
· SHUTTLE BUS ACCIDENTS
Airport accidents might also involve shuttle buses or other modes of transport within an airport. Whether you’ve sustained an injury while on board a shuttle bus or train, or even a travellator, you may be eligible to claim compensation.
· AIRPORT SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS
Slips, trips or falls are some of the most common types of airport accidents. If you’ve slipped on a wet floor or fallen down a flight of stairs in an airport, you may have a valid compensation claim.
· FOOD POISONING AND ALLERGIC REACTIONS AT AN AIRPORT
You might contract food poisoning at an airport if you eat uncooked, poorly prepared or contaminated food or drink. While some bouts of food poisoning clear up within a few days, in more serious cases, food poisoning can cause long-lasting symptoms. If you have suffered after eating at a restaurant or café at an airport, you may be able to claim. At the same time, if you have had an allergic reaction after eating food that was inadequately labelled or advertised on a menu (i.e. without alerting you to allergens), you may have a claim. For both food poisoning and food allergy cases, you must retain any receipts that prove when and where you bought the food you believe caused you to suffer from an allergy or food poisoning. You should also visit your GP or seek medical attention as soon as possible.
How much can I claim if I have been injured at an airport?
If you’ve been injured at an airport, the amount of compensation you might receive will depend on your injury and its severity. Each case is different, but you can use our compensation calculator to get an idea of how much you might be entitled to claim. As well as compensation for your injuries, you may also be able to claim back any financial losses you have incurred because of your injury. For example, if you have been off work to recover, you may be able to claim back the loss of earnings. You might also be able to claim back the cost of medication or travelling to or from medical appointments.
